🎙️ From Campus to Creative Powerhouse: An Interview with Nigerian Graphic Designer Okolo Kingsley Franklin, Founder of King’s Graphics

In the crowded halls of Nigeria’s higher institutions, many students are chasing grades. But a few, like Okolo Kingsley Franklin, are building empires. As a student, Kingsley didn’t just design his future — he branded it.

We sat down with the talented graphic designer and founder of King’s Graphics to discuss how he turned his side hustle into one of the most respected visual brands in Nigeria.

UKNIA: Kingsley, thanks for joining us. Let’s start from the beginning. How did your journey into graphic design begin?

Kingsley: Thank you! It all started during my university days around 2020. I was studying and juggling schoolwork like every other student, but I always had this strong desire to create. I used to design flyers for church events and student fellowships — for free at first. I didn't even own a laptop at the time; I was using borrowed devices and mobile apps. But every little project taught me something new.

UKNIA: So King’s Graphics was born while you were still a student?

Kingsley: Yes! 100%. I officially launched King’s Graphics during my second year in school. I remember designing my first paid logo for a friend who was launching a fashion line. It felt amazing to see someone trust my design enough to put it on their business. That’s when I realized, “I can actually do this professionally.”

UKNIA: That must have been challenging, running a design business while still studying.

Kingsley: Very challenging! Balancing lectures, assignments, and client deadlines wasn’t easy. I had to learn time management the hard way. Sometimes I would finish class and jump into five hours of client work straight — no break. But I had a vision. I wanted King’s Graphics to stand out and prove that even as a student, I could offer premium-quality designs.

UKNIA: What was the hardest part of starting out as a student entrepreneur?

Kingsley: The hardest part was trust — getting people to believe in you when you're just a young guy with no formal studio or big team. Many clients would ask, “Are you sure you can handle this project?” But I let my work speak for itself. One satisfied client led to another. Word-of-mouth helped me grow fast.

Also, affording tools was a big challenge. I couldn’t afford Adobe subscriptions or high-end laptops back then. But I made do with what I had and kept upgrading slowly as the jobs came in.

UKNIA: You’ve completed over 1,000 major projects now. How did that growth happen so quickly?

Kingsley: Consistency and customer care. I treat every first-time client like royalty — that’s part of our brand. We offer discounts to first-time customers, but we never compromise on quality. That’s why our tagline is:

“Choose your design. Change your creativity with unique designs.”

The growth came because we didn’t just deliver — we overdelivered. People were shocked at the quality they got for the price.

UKNIA: Did university play any role in helping your design career?

Kingsley: Definitely. The campus was my first market. I got to work with student unions, event organizers, fashion startups, fellowship leaders — it was like a mini-world of clients. It also helped me develop soft skills like negotiation, pitching ideas, and teamwork.

UKNIA: What advice would you give to students who want to start their own business while in school?

Kingsley: Start small, start now. Don’t wait until you graduate. If you have a skill — design, writing, tech, anything — offer it for free at first to build your portfolio. Learn from feedback. And most importantly: don’t let the lack of resources stop you. Use what you have. Your consistency will attract support.

UKNIA: What’s next for King’s Graphics?

Kingsley: We’re scaling up! I’m expanding into motion graphics, packaging design, and digital brand consulting. I also want to start a mentorship program for young creatives — to give back and help the next set of student entrepreneurs. Eventually, I see King’s Graphics becoming a full creative agency operating across Africa.

UKNIA: Finally, how can people reach you?

Kingsley: They can contact us directly via WhatsApp or call at +234 908 075 4599. We’re also active on Instagram and currently setting up our website. Whatever your brand needs — iDesign, iPrint, iBrand — we’re ready to bring it to life.
